Borneo Preparations

 What I know about Borneo you could write on the back of a matchbook.

  • It is on the equator.
  • It is hot and rainy.
  • There are a bunch of new birds to be seen as well animals bugs plants etc...
  • The national sport is head hunting.


Dec 1 we overnight in Vancouver, then a long flight to Korea and arrive in Kota Kinabalu at 0010 hr on Dec 4th. 
Allah willing.

 Another bonus is that Borneo is mostly Muslim so we won't have to worry about Christmas and all the good cheer it entails. 

Anyways our ticket to Borneo is one way so if we decide to retire there we haven't wasted half a ticket. There is an unfleshed out plan to go to Malaysia after a month in Borneo and then maybe on to Sri Lanka.

The one way ticket thing didn't work out. To get our boarding card in Whitehorse we had to have a return or onward ticket. So on the spot I bought two tickets to Sri Lanka. Aren't smart phones wondrous things.

Another revelation is that Borneo is only forty percent Muslim. The other sixty percent are into Christmas big time. The receptionist at our hotel is wearing reindeer horns and almost every business seems to have a Christmas display of some sort. We watched a choir practicing Christmas songs in the nearby park.

After 23 hours of flying and many hours between, we arrived in Perth. Our first impressions were very positive. It is a very clean well organized city with great transit and lots to see. Without sleep for the duration of our flight, we arrived in a sad state. Fortunately after walking around a bit we crashed and had a great nights sleep.  Our first task was to walk downtown and get our phones working. We had a great experience at the Telstra office where a young man from Bangladesh walked us through the process and got us a great and cheap phone data plan. As an added bonus there was a k mart next door where I purchased a quality baseball cap that matched the colour of my eyes and a good pair of sunglasses for a total of $14. South and East of Perth

We picked up our van did some shopping and headed south to Busselton and its mile long jetty. We tried to book some place to stay but everything was full. No wonder the Around the Jetty swimming event was happening and hundreds were milling around the streets. We did walk out to the end of the jetty and discovered it to be quiet and peaceful compared to town. On a whim we drove 30 kilometers out of town to a park campground. Of course it was fully booked. We parked in the very pleasant day use area and nobody bothered us. So far our best campsite of the trip. We have discovered that to get a booking in a govt campground you have to book weeks ahead. Does not bode well for us as we have trouble planning two days ahead. Next day we headed out to Cape Naturaliste light house. We found it mildly interesting and full of bugs.
