Mulu National Park
From Kuching it is an hour and fifteen minute flight to Mulu. The only access to Mulu is by air or a long boat trip.
Things are pretty quiet and relaxed in Mulu. A friendly lady with a beat up old car drives you three kilometers to the park entrance which is a suspended bridge over a small river. Here we checked into our bungalow which is right in the park. Immediately they assume you will sign up for a bunch of activities that necessitate a guide. These include cave tours, various walking tours, a canopy walk , boat tours , cultural stuff.
We signed up for a walk into Deer Cave. I was impressed. The main chamber is big enough to fit a football stadium inside it. It houses four million bats of twelve species that consume 15 tons of insects every night.
I don't really have any good pictures of the caves so you will just have to take my word that they are worth a look.
Most of our time we spent walking around the park trails looking for birds and other life. We found the birding inside the park quite frustrating. Time after time we would hear hornbills squawking and flying around above us but would only get fleeting glimpses. There is a treetop tower that we visited several times but did not have much luck there. Where we had the most success was outside the park walking along the mostly quiet roads.
Anyways we are back in Kota Kinabalu. The next post should be from Sri Lanka.
